The Caboose

I saw one day, or maybe sensed, or maybe understood

A sulky someone on the street declaring she was good.

And any time she heard a thought she didn’t understand

Or didn’t like or thought was wrong, she made a strange demand:

Do not, said she; again, Do not say such a thing to me.

My feelings feel, she said, and so you must just let me be.

Say nothing that I disagree and nothing off my par.

It is your duty. If you fail I’ll spread it wide and far

And you will be a laughingstock or cancelled or in jail

So don’t say this or question what. This demand – don’t fail!

I had a few thoughts of my own, deemed her request a ruse.

Thinking drives the train, you know, and feelings – the caboose.

But you, dear reader, don’t adhere to her weak demand.

Tell the truth, don’t secret it. ‘Tis on it this world stands.

Several decades ago I noticed an increase in anxiety in young people. Recently I had an interesting conversation with some young adults that helped me better understand the conundrum the youth (and older) find themselves in. And that is: Despite what appears to be increased opportunity for socialization due to technology, that very communication stands as a threat to be cancelled or having to fend off ad hominem attacks or to find yourself gossiped about. And while such things have always existed, they have exploded during the lives of young people to the degree that they sense their very thoughts are restricted. In fact, sometimes a greeting or smile can be misconstrued. No wonder marriage has declined 65% in the last half-century when the chance of expressing interest can result in an accusation! Rather than understand that someone’s feelings are their own purview and not the responsibility of the speaker, many people walk on eggshells when they consider talking to someone. Hence, an anxious generation.

While information and opinion has increased worldwide, accuracy and honesty is suffering. Personal communication seems to have taken a hit. What does this do to meaningful conversation? To potential friendships? To truth? I’m picturing a muzzle just now. Don’t agree to keep your mouth shut. The Bible says to speak the truth in love. I hope you will.
